Since 1923
A Family Tradition
From a life journey in the wild Wyoming mines of America, our hotel was born,
along with the name “Hotel America,”
which defines us as the hotel in the heart of Trento,
carefully managed, cared for, and passed down through the same family.
“You’re curious and a bit of a rascal too!”
It all begins in 1910
In 1910, Domenico Giovannini left San Mauro (Pinè – TN) for America, driven by a desire to see what lay beyond the stunning mountains that surrounded him. He spent four years working in the mines of Wyoming, in the tough town of Rock Springs, a place he quickly adapted to—perhaps because he came from a region known for quarrying and understood that “rough” didn’t always mean “hostile,” as the Trentino character teaches.
He returned to Europe in 1914, a time marked by turmoil. Realizing it wasn’t the right moment, he decided to head back to America, spending another six years in the mines.
The return to Trento in 1923
Domenico returned to Trento in 1923, ready to savor the greenery of the woods after many years in the Wyoming mines. He decided to embark on a second adventure, purchasing the inn Anaunia, then run by nuns, and transforming it into Hotel America—a name that tells the story of a lifetime.
The bombing
It was December 31st 1944, when the third adventure “fell” upon Domenico and his entire family, who ran and brought the hotel to life. An Allied bombing hit Hotel America directly, destroying it.
These were difficult years for everyone.
The “Merican” (aptly nicknamed) along with his wife and children rolled up their sleeves, opened a wine bar, took out bank loans, and rebuilt Hotel America, which reopened in 1951.
The family
The family is here and continues. The five children of the “Merican,” followed by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and then… one adventure leads to another.
The new millennium
One adventure leads to another—renovations, expansions, pandemics—and before you know it, Hotel America, managed and cared for by generations descended from Domenico, reaches its 101st anniversary. In 2023, right around this significant milestone, a new challenging adventure begins: the renovation of all the spaces and over 60 rooms without ever closing.
The first 101 years
The spirit of adventure is alive in this family, and the care and attention given to guest hospitality have become an integral part of the DNA of the Hotel America family. As we celebrate our first 101 years, we do so with elegance in the heart of Trento.
